About Brandraw House
Brandraw House was build from sandstone in 1879: Late Victorian Style. Many of these original features can still be found throughout the extensive house. Family life was important to the first occupants which is shown in the large family rooms. Fireplaces were build in all rooms, but unfortunately over the years many of these were removed from the bedrooms, apart from two rooms.
The second floor, now used privately, was the servants floor and that front room still has a small fireplace. On the first floor 5 large bedrooms were built and these 5 have been made into 8 nice guest rooms; all eight are still in use as such. All rooms had toilets and at the moment a few of these rooms have been refurbished to have full en-suite.
At the front of the house is a large parking area and all around are gardens. The back garden is extensive and has a beautiful panoramic view over the fells of the northern Lake District including Skiddaw.
The first owner was the village physician, who commissioned the house for his family and practise. Around 1900 Brandraw House was bought by the Brown Family and from that period we are fortunate to have some pictures, donated by an descendant of this family, the grandson of the first Mr. Brown. Grandfather and Father Brown left for New Zealand approx 1922. For many years it has been the ‘doctors house’ as in 1939 Archie’s father, who was a physician, bought the house and Archie himself became a physician too.
A little note to the side: as the Rankin Family bought Brandraw House, electricity was installed for the large sum of £80. Rankin’s son (Archie) had his practice next door while his sister stayed at Brandraw House who sold the house 1982, then , in 1998, the house was bought by the previous occupant who used it on a small scale as a B&B.
About us
We, Robert and Joan, bought this beautiful house in 2006 and soon decided to start the refurbishing and restart the B&B. It’s a beautiful house and it would be a shame to keep it to ourselves! We think it’s wonderful to have it open as a B&B and have many people enjoy its atmosphere and history. Sure enough, it’s a lot of work and as it is old refurbishments and restorations will never end. But then again, we love the charm of living in a historic house and sharing it at the same time as a B&B.
